How to Mix Metallic Tones Using Super GILD

1. Choose Your Base Colour

Begin with the tone closest to the result you want. Gold is ideal for warm classic golds, antique gold effects or champagne mixes. Platinum is ideal for cool silvery tones or softened metallics. Burnt Copper is ideal for warm, earthy metallics or bronzed tones.

2. Choose Your Accent Tone

Start with a small amount of your base tone and slowly blend in your second tone. Even a tiny amount can adjust the tone, so add gradually.

3. Mix Colours Until Perfect

Use a palette knife or brush to mix your chosen tones on a tile or palette. A little really does go a long way. Small changes to your ratios can create entirely different tones.

Layering Metallics

Metallics behave differently from solid colours. Layering gives your piece depth and creates an authentic metallic glow, especially when using two tones. Allow one layer to dry, then gently brush a lighter or darker tone over the top.

  • Super GILD Gold, Platinum and Burnt Copper blend seamlessly to create endless custom metallic shades. For consistent results, begin with very small amounts, mix thoroughly, and record your exact ratios. Always test your blend on a sample or swatch before applying it to your project.

  • Yes. All Guild Lane water-based paints (excluding GILD Chrome) are fully intermixable with our GILD Originals and Jubilee colours. Super GILD can be thinned with 5–10% clean water only to adjust flow, but avoid other mediums, which may interfere with the metallic foils and lustre. Always test before committing to a full piece.

  • No. When mixed within recommended ratios, Super GILD retains its durability, fade resistance, self-levelling properties and fast-drying time. Very thick layers or dilution may slightly alter opacity or drying speed, so testing is always recommended.

  • Super GILD adheres beautifully to most porous and non-porous surfaces, including furniture, wood, metal, mouldings, decorative objects, natural materials, resin details and light-use fabrics such as decorative cushions or wall hangings. Super GILD can be used both indoors and outdoors; for exterior or high-handling surfaces, we recommend applying Coating Extras - Clear Coat Gloss for added durability and protection.

  • Yes. Super GILD performs beautifully on decorative glass such as vases, frames, ornaments and display pieces, creating a refined, reflective metallic finish. For best adhesion, ensure the glass is thoroughly cleaned and degreased, then lightly keyed or prepared with a suitable primer.

    As Super GILD is a decorative, flexible coating, it is best suited to glass applications where moisture cannot get beneath the paint surface, ensuring the finish remains beautifully intact over time.

  • Yes. Even when mixed, Super GILD offers near full coverage in one coat on many surfaces, thanks to its exceptionally high pigment load. It is also an excellent gold leaf alternative, delivering a luminous, leaf-like metallic finish with far greater ease and control, offering refined results with easy one-step simplicity.
