How to Mix Metallic Paint Colours to Create Your Custom Gold, Bronze, or Antique Metallic Finish
There is something magical about metallics. They bring warmth, history and a quiet luxury to any space, and with Super GILD set, you are not limited to one tone. You can mix, layer and blend your own custom metallic tone that feels crafted rather than manufactured.
Super GILD is Guild Lane’s luxury metallic paint designed for people who make with heart. If you want a gold leaf-inspired finish, soft champagne tones, burnished copper or a cooler platinum finish, this paint invites you to play, experiment and create something beautiful.
Super GILD comes in three core colours: Gold, Platinum, and Burnt Copper. Each one is richly pigmented, blendable and perfect for creating your own signature metallic mix.

Why Super GILD Is the Best Metallic Paint?
Perfect for Interiors,
Furniture and Decorative Projects
Super GILD was designed to offer the most luxurious metallic finish possible without the effort, cost or cracking that can come with leafing. It is creamy, buildable and incredibly pigmented. Our formula is unlike any other on the market. This allows you to create a stunning range of metallic finishes.
Because Super GILD is water-based, low VOC and suitable for both interior and exterior projects, it can be used on furniture, frames, mouldings, décor, hardware and more.
This is paint for people who care about craft.
All three Super GILD metallic shades are painted on raw,
bisque-fired ceramic vases.
The Super GILD Trio
Gold, Platinum and Burnt Copper together form a complete metallic palette. They can be mixed, layered and blended in countless ways.
If you are looking to create your own customised metallic tone for your project, you have come to the right place. Perhaps you are not sure if you want a Platinum, Gold or Burnt Copper hue, or perhaps you want to create a tone with a unique depth, warmth or coolness. You can create a wide range of bespoke metallic effects simply by mixing and blending our three Super GILDs together.
The three core Super GILDs are:
✦ Super GILD Gold
✦ Super GILD Platinum
✦ Super GILD Burnt Copper
Blend any of these on your palette to create the exact tone you are after. You may be surprised by how much range you can achieve by adjusting ratios by the smallest amount.
Begin with the tone closest to the result you want. Gold is ideal for warm classic golds, antique gold effects or champagne mixes. Platinum is ideal for cool silvery tones or softened metallics. Burnt Copper is ideal for warm, earthy metallics or bronzed tones.
Start with a small amount of your base tone and slowly blend in your second tone. Even a tiny amount can adjust the tone, so add gradually.
Use a palette knife or brush to mix your chosen tones on a tile or palette. A little really does go a long way. Small changes to your ratios can create entirely different tones.
G 25% | P 50% | BC 25%
A muted, graceful gold with a gentle platinum influence. The result is an understated metallic that feels airy, refined and quietly luxurious and perfect for those who prefer a softer, more contemporary interpretation of gold.
G 75% | P 25%
A deep, character-rich gold warmed with a touch of burnt copper. This creates a more historic, museum-inspired shade with natural depth and patina and ideal for achieving a classic, time-honoured aesthetic.
P 50% | BC 50%
A warm, softly glowing metallic created by blending burnt copper with a hint of platinum. The result is a balanced rose-toned finish that feels elegant and inviting without appearing overly pink.
G 25% | P 75%
A softened platinum with a gentle lift of gold. This blend reduces the coolness of pure platinum and creates a luminous tone with a more natural, balanced warmth.
Layering Metallics
for Depth and Realism
Metallics behave differently from solid colours. Layering gives your piece depth and creates an authentic metallic glow, especially when using two tones. Allow one layer to dry, then gently brush a lighter or darker tone over the top.
For example:
Gold brushed over platinum creates a champagne highlight.
Burnt Copper under gold creates a warm, rich glow.
Gold under platinum creates a cool, aged silver gold hybrid.
Layering mimics the tonal variation in real leaf and metalwork.

Yes. All Guild Lane water-based paints (excluding GILD Chrome) are fully intermixable with our GILD Originals and Jubilee colours. Super GILD can be thinned with 5–10% clean water only to adjust flow, but avoid other mediums, which may interfere with the metallic foils and lustre. Always test before committing to a full piece.
No. When mixed within recommended ratios, Super GILD retains its durability, fade resistance, self-levelling properties and fast-drying time. Very thick layers or dilution may slightly alter opacity or drying speed, so testing is always recommended.
Super GILD adheres beautifully to most porous and non-porous surfaces, including furniture, wood, metal, mouldings, decorative objects, natural materials, resin details and light-use fabrics such as decorative cushions or wall hangings. Super GILD can be used both indoors and outdoors; for exterior or high-handling surfaces, we recommend applying Coating Extras - Clear Coat Gloss for added durability and protection.
Yes. Super GILD performs beautifully on decorative glass such as vases, frames, ornaments and display pieces, creating a refined, reflective metallic finish. For best adhesion, ensure the glass is thoroughly cleaned and degreased, then lightly keyed or prepared with a suitable primer.
As Super GILD is a decorative, flexible coating, it is best suited to glass applications where moisture cannot get beneath the paint surface, ensuring the finish remains beautifully intact over time.
Yes. Even when mixed, Super GILD offers near full coverage in one coat on many surfaces, thanks to its exceptionally high pigment load. It is also an excellent gold leaf alternative, delivering a luminous, leaf-like metallic finish with far greater ease and control, offering refined results with easy one-step simplicity.
