Gilded Grandeur with Super GILD

Daniel Bland, founder of Bland Design, is an international artist and specialist decorator known for redefining interiors with his distinctive approach to colour, texture, and metallic detailing. His latest creation—a striking, monochromatic red cinema room—pushes the boundaries of artistry, showcasing his mastery of trompe-l'œil techniques and the transformative power of Super GILD.

A Parisian-Inspired Vision

The inspiration for this project came from Daniel’s recent trip to Paris, where he was captivated by the intricate plasterwork adorning historic architecture. Determined to bring this level of craftsmanship into his own work, he employed trompe-l'œil—a classical painting technique that creates realistic optical illusions, giving the impression of three-dimensional decorative mouldings.

Bringing the Vision to Life with Super GILD

To achieve the trompe-l'œil effect, Daniel built up layers using Super GILD Gold as a base before blending Burnt Copper and Platinum for depth and contrast. His method allowed the metallics to catch the light, creating a striking illusion of sculpted details.

To achieve the 3D look, I mixed a highlight and shadow with Platinum and Burnt Copper into the Gold. The base coat I painted with just Gold, then the second coat dipping the left and right sides of the brush into the highlight and shadow shades, painting in one direction at the same time to blend. — DB

For precision, Daniel used painter’s tape to mask off straight lines and created custom paper templates for intricate detailing.

I did a pencil outline first, but it was hard to see against the red. So, I made paper templates, scribbled graphite on the back, and traced the design onto the wall. — DB

I love the crisp line of freehand painting vs stencils. — DB

His expert tip for achieving perfectly crisp lines?

For this project, I used tape for all the straight lines. Top tip—seal the tape by painting over the edges with the wall colour (in my case, red), so any bleed marks are invisible, and you get the perfect crisp, shiny lines. — DB

The result? A breathtakingly immersive space, reminiscent of Parisian grandeur and theatrical elegance. The interplay of light, shadow, and metallic sheen adds movement and depth, making the room feel both expansive and dramatic—the perfect setting for a luxurious home cinema experience.
