British Racing Green is one of the most enduring colours in British design.
Defined by its depth, restraint and quiet confidence, it has moved beyond its origins to become a considered choice for furniture and interiors alike.
British Racing Green Interiors Inspiration
British Racing Green lends itself naturally to layered, atmospheric interiors, long associated with classic English interior design. As a deep green paint, it brings a grounding sense of depth and structure, allowing furniture, cabinetry and interior details to feel defined. It works effortlessly with natural materials; timber softens its richness, while brass, bronze, and gold introduce warmth. The result is an interior that feels calm, cohesive and quietly refined.
British Racing Green has its origins in early motor racing, where colour was used to distinguish national teams. During the 1903 Gordon Bennett race, British cars were painted a deep green in recognition of the event's Irish setting, establishing a colour that became closely associated with Britain.
Over time, the colour moved beyond the track and into wider design. It became a familiar choice across cars, interiors and furniture, known for its depth and understated character.
As a paint colour, British Racing Green sits firmly within the deep, dark green family. It provides strong coverage and definition, making it particularly effective on furniture, cabinetry and interior details where a more grounded colour is needed.
It works effortlessly alongside natural materials such as wood and metal, while lighter neutrals help to balance its depth, allowing the colour to sit comfortably within a space without overwhelming it.
A British Racing Green Furniture Makeover
This project is a clear example of how British Racing Green can restore presence to a piece without losing its original character. This Priory sideboard, with a classic form and strong proportions, had an existing painted finish, while the top showed heavy wear from plant pots, leaving dark water staining across the surface.
The previous finish was removed using a combination of a carbide scraper and sanding, allowing the piece to be taken back cleanly while preserving the integrity of the timber.
The top required additional work, with oxalic acid applied more than once to lift the staining and return the wood to a more even tone.
Rather than covering the timber completely, a diluted wash of Bleo in Desert Sand was applied. This softened the remaining variation while maintaining a natural appearance, adding a subtle neutral tone without introducing opacity. A clear coat was then applied, giving durability while keeping the finish refined with a slight sheen.
The base was painted in British Racing Green, a heritage colour within the Guild Lane Jubilee palette, applied in even coats to build colour gradually. The result is a balanced composition of colour and material. A deep heritage green paired with softened timber, creating a piece that feels classic.
Choosing the Right Paint for Furniture
Jubilee Fine Furniture Paint is designed to apply cleanly and build colour evenly, allowing deeper tones such as British Racing Green to develop without becoming heavy. As an all-in-one formulation with a built-in topcoat, Jubilee delivers a smooth, durable finish while maintaining clarity of colour.
British Racing Green works best when paired with tones that complement its depth rather than compete with it. Warm neutrals such as Old English White, Transvaal Grey, and soft beige provide balance, while materials like brass, bronze and cognac leather introduce warmth and contrast.
These combinations are often seen in more traditional interiors, where colour and material work together rather than stand apart.

Gold Metallic Furniture: A Statement Cabinet Makeover
Furniture refinishing does not always have to follow traditional expectations. While heritage restorations and softly aged finishes have their place, some pieces call for something far more expressive.
