Sew Much to Say: Transforming Textiles with Bleo

Kim of Sew Much to Say turns discarded textiles into bold, wearable art. A passionate upcycler and creative educator, she pushes the boundaries of fashion waste through inventive techniques. Experimenting with BLEO fabric paint, she transformed a thrifted dress with striking colour blends, freehand designs, and handwritten details—proving that sustainability and style can go hand in hand.

From Landfill to Wearable Art | Upcycled Fashion with Guild Lane’s Bleo Fabric Paint

At Guild Lane, we love collaborating with makers who merge creativity and sustainability. Kim of Sew Much to Say is one of those inspiring artists, rescuing textiles bound for landfill and transforming them into stunning wearable art.

“I always use textiles that are destined for landfill. I seem to be the go-to before they reach that point.” – Kim

For her latest project, Kim crafted a sculptural bucket dress using a hotel duvet cover intercepted by Surplus to Supper, a charity that redistributes surplus materials to prevent waste. The pattern she chose, the Sculptural Bucket Coat by Stitchless TV, reflects her admiration for experimental, zero-waste design.

“I love her patterns; she also shares some great tutorials on YouTube.” – Kim

Experimenting with Guild Lanes' new Bleo Fabric Paint

When Kim discovered Guild Lane’s new Bleo Fabric Paint, she immediately began experimenting with colour, texture, and technique.

“When I heard about Guild Lane's new paint Bleo, I knew they’d be good; all their paints are. It glides on so well, unlike others I’ve tried that clog or sit on top of the fabric.” – Kim

Kim mixed Bleo’s blue and red to create a near-black tone, using it to hand-paint stripes and dots across the front of the dress. She applied the paint using both a brush and a brayer roller, achieving a freehand, watercolour-like effect that retained the softness of the fabric.

“I used a brayer roller for the freehand technique at the back and the front. It gives a lovely textured look and is very quick and effective.”

To set the paint, she used a high-heat iron with a protective cloth, then added handwritten lyrics from Morcheeba’s “Fear Can Stop Your Love”  bringing another layer of artistry and meaning to the design.

A Brush with Bleo: Creating a Hand-Painted Dress

Kim’s second Bleo experiment pushed her creativity even further. Using surplus shirts and thrifted silk organza (once part of a shop window display), she created a tiered, upcycled ombré dress.

By soaking the fabric in diluted Bleo for a soft wash of colour, then layering richer tones once dry, Kim achieved a seamless gradient effect that blended effortlessly across the garment.

“I needed more depth, so I mixed Bleo’s red and blue to create a darker tone. The paint worked beautifully on fabric, allowing rich colours and smooth transitions.”

The result is a one-of-a-kind upcycled piece, soft, wearable, and expressive, showcasing Bleo’s ability to bring texture, depth, and creativity to any fabric project.

I’d recommend adding this reel  https://www.instagram.com/reel/DFhyZ5DO3CD/?igsh=MXNlY3gwNWx0OGIxbA== to your YouTube Shorts and embedding it in this post.

Sustainability and Teaching

For Kim, sustainability is not just part of her process; it’s her purpose.

“Textiles are one of the greatest contributors to landfill. Many never decompose or cause harm to the planet. I advocate using what we already have around us, it’s much more fun!” – Kim.

As a freelance tutor, Kim teaches upcycling, garment reworking, and mending in schools, community groups, and creative workshops. She also partners with small businesses for commissions, pattern testing, and custom textile art, with plans to launch her own collection soon.

For collaborations, workshops, or bespoke commissions, Kim can be found on Instagram at @sewmuchtosay.

Frequently Asked Questions | Bleo Fabric Paint

What makes Guild Lane's Bleo Paint unique for textiles?

Bleo is a professional-grade, water-based gel paint specifically formulated for fabrics. It delivers vibrant, fade-resistant colour that remains exceptionally soft, flexible, and breathable on fabric once dry, avoiding the stiffness often associated with fabric paints.

What types of fabrics can I use it on?

Bleo works best on uncoated, absorbent textiles, including natural fibres such as cotton, linen, and silk, as well as many blended fabrics. Because it absorbs into the fibres, each fabric responds slightly differently, adding to the character of the finished piece.

Will Bleo make my fabric stiff or rigid?

No. One of Bleo's key benefits is that it dries without stiffness, preserving the natural drape, movement, and feel of the textile. This makes it ideal for wearable art, garments, and soft furnishings.

How do I ensure my Bleo designs are durable and washable?

For long-lasting, washable results, allow your Bleo design to dry fully (around 24 hours), then heat-set using a hot iron with a protective cloth between the iron and the fabric. This cures the paint and helps lock in the colour.
