Furniture Paint Artist, Educator, Photographer - Jonathon Marc Mendes

Jonathon Marc Mendes has become one of the most respected names in decorative furniture painting through a body of work that feels deeply artistic, tactile and emotionally grounded.

Known internationally through his business Jonathon Marc Mendes Painted Love, Jonathon is celebrated for layered decorative finishes, atmospheric furniture transformations and exceptional photography that captures texture and light with remarkable sensitivity. Entirely self-taught, he has built a creative career rooted in experimentation, craftsmanship and an instinctive understanding of surface.

Today, Jonathon teaches decorative painting techniques around the world, sharing his approach to furniture artistry, texture and finish with a global audience of painters and creatives. Alongside his decorative furniture work, he is also widely recognised for photography education, creative workshops and online teaching through his YouTube channel, where he inspires thousands of furniture painters and decorative artists internationally.

Jonathon has appeared as a guest speaker at major decorative arts events, where his distinctive artistic approach to decorative finish and storytelling continues to influence the wider furniture painting community.

At Guild Lane, we are continually inspired by makers who see paint as more than colour alone. For Jonathon, paint becomes a means of creating atmosphere, depth and character. His work reflects many of the qualities we value most deeply: craftsmanship, restraint, warmth and a thoughtful understanding of materials and surface.

The Story Behind Painted Love

Jonathon Marc Mendes Painted Love has become known for decorative furniture artistry that feels timeless rather than trend-led. Jonathon’s work explores layered paint finishes, aged surfaces, patina, and softly worn metallic detail in a way that feels elegant, believable and deeply personal.

What makes his creative journey especially inspiring is the fact that he developed his practice entirely independently. Without formal training, Jonathon refined his understanding of decorative furniture painting through years of experimentation, observation and hands-on making. That instinctive relationship with paint and texture is visible throughout every piece.

There is a softness and balance to the work that cannot easily be taught. Metallics appear embedded naturally into the surface rather than sharply applied. Crackled finishes feel genuinely aged rather than decorative for effect. Painted furniture carries warmth, depth and atmosphere without ever feeling overworked.

It is one thing to understand the technical process behind these finishes, but something entirely different to know how texture, colour and patina should work together naturally. Jonathon has a genuine artist’s instinct for balance, atmosphere and restraint, which is what gives his work such authenticity and depth.

Jonathon’s work is immediately recognisable because of this innate talent. It feels collected, carefully curated and authentic rather than manufactured.

An Internationally Respected Furniture Paint Artist and Educator

Over the years, Jonathon Marc Mendes has become one of the most sought-after educators within the decorative furniture painting world.

He teaches decorative painting techniques internationally, helping furniture painters and creatives develop confidence in layering, texture, finish and artistic storytelling through paint. His workshops are admired not only for their technical depth, but also for the calm and encouraging way he teaches.

Jonathon's ability to explain decorative finishes comes from a genuine understanding rather than a formula. Students connect deeply with his thoughtful approach to creativity, surface and craftsmanship.

Alongside international workshops and teaching events, Jonathon is also highly respected for his photography education. His photography classes and creative guidance have become especially sought after within the decorative interiors and furniture painting community because of his extraordinary understanding of light, composition and atmosphere.

The imagery surrounding his furniture artistry feels soft, layered and emotionally rich. Texture, patina and finish are captured with remarkable sensitivity, allowing viewers to experience the atmosphere of a piece rather than simply observe it.

Decorative Furniture Painting with Atmosphere and Depth

Jonathon’s decorative furniture work stands apart because it never feels purely decorative. Every painted surface carries a sense of atmosphere and emotional depth. Layered colour, softened metallics and aged textures work together naturally, creating furniture that feels settled within a space rather than visually competing with it.

This quiet confidence is what makes the work so compelling. Many decorative finishes rely on excess to create impact. Jonathon’s approach is more restrained and architectural. The surfaces feel believable, tactile and timeless.

This distinction matters. There is a growing movement towards interiors and furniture that feel human, crafted and emotionally grounded rather than perfectly polished or trend-driven. Jonathon’s work sits beautifully within this shift towards decorative artistry that values texture, warmth and authenticity.

At Guild Lane, we believe these layered, material-led finishes help create interiors with lasting beauty, emotional permanence and a genuine sense of craft.

Guild Lane X Jonathon Marc Mendes

Few makers understand colour, texture and surface with the sensitivity that Jonathon Marc Mendes brings to his work.

Over recent months, we have had the pleasure of collaborating with Jonathon across a series of furniture transformations, each exploring a different aspect of decorative finish, heritage colour and creative craftsmanship. From architectural cabinetry and atmospheric furniture makeovers to hand-painted marble effects, every project demonstrates Jonathon’s remarkable ability to reveal the beauty within a piece while remaining true to its character.

What we appreciate most is Jonathon’s thoughtful approach to making. His work is never driven by trend or excess. Instead, it is rooted in careful observation, material understanding and an instinctive feel for balance, proportion and atmosphere.

That philosophy aligns closely with our own.

Speaking about his experience using Jubilee, Jonathon recently described it perfectly:

"It is a no-fuss paint. It does what you expect paint to do. Open the tin and paint your project."

For us, that simple statement captures exactly what we set out to achieve. Paint should support creativity rather than complicate it. It should give makers the confidence to focus on design, craftsmanship and the enjoyment of the creative process.

The following projects offer a glimpse into Jonathon’s approach, showcasing how colour, finish and thoughtful design can transform overlooked furniture into pieces with lasting beauty and character.

The project was also documented through Jonathon’s exceptional photography and shared through both a detailed YouTube video on his channel and accompanying social content, giving furniture painters and decorative artists valuable insight into his creative process, layering techniques and approach to finish.

In the video, Jonathon spoke about the excitement of rescuing overlooked furniture and transforming solid, well-made pieces with thoughtful design and carefully chosen colour. Speaking about his first experience using Jubilee, he described the results as “staggering”, praising the ease of application and the freedom the paint gave him to focus more fully on the overall creative vision of the piece.

That perspective reflects something we care about deeply at Guild Lane. Paint should support creativity rather than complicate it. It should allow makers to focus on atmosphere, materiality and the emotional quality of a surface with confidence and ease. At Guild Lane, our goal is to create paints that act as tools for creativity.

For makers and furniture painters looking to understand how colour, texture and atmosphere can work together naturally, it is a remarkable example of decorative furniture artistry handled with confidence and restraint.

Verdigris, Rail Blue, and Decorative Surface Detail

Another recent Guild Lane collaboration explored Jonathon’s ability to balance heritage colour with architectural texture and design detail in a completely different way. Using Jubilee Rail Blue alongside Verdigris and GILD Bronze, Jonathon transformed a contemporary cabinet into something that felt storied, aged and quietly ecclesiastical.

The outer cabinet was finished in Verdigris, a historic copper-green shade long associated with traditional pigments, oxidised metalwork and decorative arts. Inside, Jonathon introduced rich depth using Rail Blue, the deep blue originally developed for British Rail during the 1960s and celebrated for its softened turquoise undertones and understated confidence. He then layered GILD Bronze detailing through stencil work within the interior, creating warmth and subtle metallic richness against the darker tones.

What made the piece especially striking was Jonathon’s decision to cut away part of the cabinet door, creating a silhouette reminiscent of aged architectural detailing from an English church. The result felt artistic and sculptural while still remaining calm and beautifully restrained.

As with much of Jonathon’s furniture artistry, the transformation demonstrated how colour, texture and finish can completely alter the emotional character of a piece without relying on excess or trend driven decoration.

The project was shared through a detailed YouTube tutorial and accompanying social content, offering furniture painters and decorative creatives valuable insight into Jonathon’s layered approach to colour, texture and furniture transformation.

Transvaal Grey, Marble Effect and the Beauty of Restoration

Jonathon’s ability to recognise beauty and potential in overlooked furniture is part of what makes his work so inspiring.

One recent transformation began with a £5 card table discovered at a local recycling centre. What could easily have been discarded became an elegant decorative piece layered with softness, atmosphere and refined surface detail.

Using Jubilee Transvaal Grey alongside Dover White and Jet Black, Jonathon created a beautifully understated marble effect across the tabletop, bringing depth and movement to the surface while allowing the original character of the piece to remain intact.

The marbling feels soft and natural rather than overly polished, echoing aged honed stone and timeworn decorative surfaces often found within heritage interiors. Combined with the sculptural detailing of the base and the muted warmth of the palette, the finished piece feels calm, timeless and quietly luxurious.

Like much of Jonathon’s furniture artistry, the transformation demonstrates how thoughtful colour placement and decorative finish can completely shift the emotional quality of a piece without losing its authenticity.

A Genuine Creative Presence

Beyond the extraordinary artistry, Jonathon is also known for being an incredibly warm and generous person. There is sincerity in the way he teaches, creates and shares his work. Nothing feels performative or overly curated. The creativity comes from genuine passion for decorative painting, craftsmanship and artistic process.

That authenticity is part of what makes people connect so strongly with both Jonathon and his work. It feels deeply human because the maker behind it is too.

Why Jonathon Marc Mendes Continues to Inspire Furniture Painters Worldwide

Jonathon Marc Mendes has built far more than a successful decorative furniture painting business. Through Painted Love, international workshops, photography education, YouTube teaching and decorative artistry, he has helped shape how many people understand furniture painting and decorative finish today.

His work reminds people that decorative furniture painting can be artistic, atmospheric and emotionally powerful when approached with care and sensitivity. Most importantly, the work always feels honest. And that honesty is what gives it lasting beauty.

Outdoor Durability Of Jubilee Furniture Paint

British weather is charmingly unpredictable and hard on wood. Garden furniture endures rain, sun, frost and more. Without proper protection, wood fades, dries out and can warp. That's why a UV-stable, high-pigment paint like Jubilee is essential.
