Deciding which type of paint to buy can be a difficult task. There are several different types of paint in the market with different uses, compositions, finishes, drying times, preparation techniques and more. Particularly, distinguishing between Guild Lane Acrylic Paints and Chalk Paint is tricky because the similarities in applications.

Applications

A highly flexible, multi-purpose paint that adheres to just about any surface that is formulated with a built in topcoat for an easy one step process. Refer to our Jubilee Guide for more information on surface applications.

A decorative paint that can be used on just about any surface but must be sealed to avoid marking, chipping, flaking, peeling, or fading. 

Preparation and priming

Little to no preparation on most surfaces is necessary. However, depending on the condition of the item being painted or if painting over an oil-based coating, priming or sanding may be required.

Waxing and sealants

Formulated with a built in sealant. No waxing, finishing coats or varnishes are necessary after drying. 

Waxing is essential after painting to avoid adherence issues. Surfaces should be re-waxed every 2-3 years.

Durability

Extremely durable. Formulated with a built in sealant that results in a hard wearing, scratch and weather resistant.

Poor durability. Chalk paint naturally has very poor durability and is very absorbent and prone to marking, fading, flaking, chipping and scuffing if not properly sealed. 

Outdoor use

Yes. Waterproof once dry that can withstand most harsh weather conditions.

Sometimes. Can be used outdoors but it is not waterproof. 

Fade resistance

Excellent fade resistant qualities due to the combination of highly concentrated pigment loading and UV resistant binders.

Very prone to fading in the sun and other outdoor conditions if a sealant or wax is not applied.

Colour vibrancy

Extremely vibrant. Made with finely ground pigments of the highest quality that are formulated with maximum brilliance and colour clarity that remain vivid even in harsh sunlight.

Relatively vibrant. Vibrancy may be muted due to its thick, chalky base, super matt finish and lack of adhesive properties.

Coverage

Exceptional Coverage. Due to its extremely high pigment loading and medium body consistency, this self-levelling formula goes a long way and results in an excellent, even finish with a slight sheen. 

Excellent Coverage. Due to its relatively thick consistency, Chalk paint offers very good coverage with a chalky, textured finish. 

Drying Time (when paint is dry to the touch)

Fast. Under average climate conditions, touch dry within 1-2 hours. In warm conditions and low humidity, drying times can be reduced; wet or cold conditions can yield longer drying times. Allow surfaces to be touch dry between coats. 

Fast. Chalk paint  is usually touch dry within 1-2 hours. In warm conditions and low humidity, the dry time can be reduced; and increased in wet or cold conditions. Surfaces must be touch dry between coats. 

Curing Time (when painted surface has reached its maximum hardness) 

Fast. From 1 to 20 days, depending on climate conditions, applied coats, surface area, material painted, and colour used (darker colours can sometimes take longer to cure than light colours).

Slow. Total curing time can take up to 40 days including chalk paint cure time (from 1-7 days) plus wax coat cure time (up to 30 days).

Environmentally friendly

Yes. Jubilee carries the industry’s lowest VOC rating meaning it emits little to no volatile organic compounds into the air making it an environmentally friendly paint.

Odour

Odourless. Due to its low VOC rating, Jubilee emits little to no toxins and is virtually odourless.

Suitability for children

EN-71 certified meaning it has been tried, tested and approved for painting children's furniture and toys.

Finish

Smooth. A medium bodied paint formulated with self-levelling properties that leaves an even, smooth finish with deep saturation of colour and a light sheen..

Chalky. A thick body paint that does not self-level and usually leaves an uneven, textured or distressed look with a very matt finish. 

Easy to clean

Yes. Its water-based formula allows for easy clean up of fresh or wet paint from hands and brushes. Simply wash with soap and warm water.
